Effects of prosodic boundaries on ambiguous syntactic clause boundaries in Japanese

چکیده
We report the results of experiments designed to investigate the effects of prosodic boundaries on resolving ambiguous syntactic clause boundaries in Japanese. The head-final, prodrop nature of this language generates abundant syntactic attachment ambiguity for sentences that contain relative clauses. Two types of sentences with differing head nouns modified by relative clauses were examined. Syntactic attachment preferences for these two types of sentences in the absence of overt prosody were assessed in a written study. Results indicated that readers retrieved one clear meaning for one type whereas ambiguity was not clearly resolved for the other type. A sentence comprehension study was conducted using auditory versions of both sentence types, each produced with two prosodic structures. Results demonstrated the crucial use of prosodic boundary information in retrieving syntactic clause boundary information. Most importantly, prosodic boundaries affected the way listeners posited empty pronouns for the subject of main or subordinate predicates. These results demonstrated the fundamental importance of prosodic phrasal structure to the assignment of syntactic constituency during sentence comprehension, particularly in the case of a headfinal, pro-drop language.

Prosodic Disambiguation of Syntactic Clause Boundaries in Korean
This study explored the effects of prosodic boundaries on the comprehension of temporarily and globally ambiguous sentences in Korean. Previous work on English, Japanese, and Korean has demonstrated that prosodic structures can carry critical information about the meaning and/or syntactic structures of spoken sentences (Kjelgaard and Speer 1999; Jun and Oh 1996; Misono et al. 1997; Venditti 199...

In automatic speech understanding, the division of continuously running speech into syntactic chunks is a great problem. Syntactic boundaries are often marked by prosodic means. For the training of statistic models for prosodic boundaries large data-bases are necessary. For the GermanVerbmobil project (automatic speech{to{speech translation), we developed a syntactic-prosodic labeling scheme wh...

متن کاملImproving parsing of spontaneous speech with the help of prosodic boundaries
Parsing can be improved in automatic speech understanding if prosodic boundary marking is taken into account, because syntactic boundaries are often marked by prosodic means. Because large databases are needed for the training of statistical models for prosodic boundaries, we developed a labeling scheme for syntactic{prosodic boundaries within the German Verbmobil project (automatic speech{to{s...
متن کاملAnalysing the Correspondence Between Automatic Prosodic Segmentation and Syntactic Structure
Prosody and syntax are highly related, even if the prosodic structure cannot be directly mapped to the syntactic one and vice versa. This paper presents an experiment for exploring in what degree a powerful HMM-based automatic prosodic segmentation tool can recover the syntactic structure of an utterance in speech understanding systems. Results show that the approach is capable of recalling up ...
